Digital Transformation Mission at UNIKIN

AL & Legacy accompanies the University of Kinshasa in a comprehensive digital transformation program, academic modernization, and administrative process optimization.

A Strategic Partnership for Academic Excellence in Central Africa

On February 20, 2024, AL & Legacy achieved a historic milestone by launching a major digital transformation initiative for the University of Kinshasa (UNIKIN). Founded in 1954 as Lovanium University, UNIKIN is the oldest, largest, and most prestigious higher education and research institution in the Democratic Republic of the Congo.

Spanning a campus of over 400 hectares on Mount Amba, the university hosts more than 30,000 students across 12 faculties (Medicine, Law, Economics, Engineering, Agronomy, Psychology, etc.), supported by over 2,000 professors, researchers, and administrative staff.

However, despite the recognized value of its degrees and faculty excellence, UNIKIN faced major operational vulnerabilities: manual registration management on paper ledgers, delays in delivering transcripts and diplomas, lack of unified campus Wi-Fi, and limited digitization of central library resources.

"Digitally transforming UNIKIN means modernizing the very forge of the DRC's leadership elite. We bring a methodology combining cutting-edge technology with change management tailored to higher education."

Academic and Administrative Diagnostic

Prior to deploying IT solutions, AL & Legacy's team conducted a thorough assessment of the university's information system, identifying 4 critical friction points:

  1. Cumbersome registration and re-enrollment processes: Students faced multiple physical queues at finance, faculty, and central registrar offices, creating bottlenecks lasting several weeks at the start of each academic year.
  2. Delays in grade consolidation: Manual compilation of grade deltas between departments delayed publication and increased encoding error risks.
  3. Absence of a unified Learning Management System (LMS): Outside physical lecture halls, students lacked an official platform to access course materials, submit assignments, or communicate with professors.
  4. Vulnerability of academic archives: Paper archives of historical deliberation records were exposed to physical degradation or loss.

AL & Legacy's 4-Pillar Action Plan

To address these challenges sustainably, AL & Legacy deployed an integrated program:

  1. SWOT Audit & IT Master Plan: Defining the campus fiber network target architecture, cybersecurity policy, and data server infrastructure.
  2. Academic Management Information System (SIG-UNIKIN): Online student portal for registration, Mobile Money/Card payment processing, automated grade transcripts with anti-fraud QR codes.
  3. Capacity Building & Coaching: Hands-on training for 500+ administrative staff and faculty members on LMS platforms (Moodle/Canvas).
  4. Infrastructure & Network Monitoring: Connecting 12 faculties to the university fiber backbone and deploying 24/7 Network Operations Center (NOC) monitoring.
